Richard Wagner 200th birthday anniversary (May 13-26)

Clash of the Titans: A Bicentenary Exploration of Verdi & Wagner; May 26 at 2pm; Exploring Music - May 13-24 at 9pm; Selections throughout his birthday on May 22. It has been said that more has been written about Richard Wagner than anyone in history, excepting Christ and perhaps Napoleon. Wagner transformed operatic thought through his concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk ("total work of art"). His idea was to synthesize the poetic, visual, musical, and dramatic arts, with music subsidiary to drama.

rite of srping 100th anniversary (May 25, 7pm / May 29, 6pm)

May 29 is the 100th anniversary of the eventful premiere of The Rite of Spring. Stravinsky’s completely original instrumentation and rhythms and his use of dissonance, have made this work one of the most important of the 20th century, not to mention the riot and ensuing scandal that caused this Paris premiere to be one of the most shocking in all of performance history. Classical 89 offers two broadcasts to observe this anniversary. First, it’s “The Rite of Spring – the 100 Year Shock Wave,” airing on May 25 at 7pm. The program includes first-hand recollections of the famous first night from Dame Marie Rambert, who was one of the dancers, and Igor Stravinsky, who was in the audience. Also, comments by dancers, choreographer, and conductors of today. Then, on May 29, Performance Today will include an exciting performance by the Dallas Symphony, conducted by Jaap van Zweden, and New Yorker critic Alex Ross will talk about the events of the premiere.

Lovely as studio recordings may be, many aficionados will insist that nothing compares with adrenalized performances before live audiences! The School of Music records their musicians live, and then Classical 89 takes great pride in helping those performances have a long and well-deserved afterlife on the radio. Join us whenever you can. We'll put your ears (and maybe even your heart) in the De Jong Concert Hall, the Madsen Recital Hall, and wherever else the faculty and students of BYU may be performing.
