The term "hooligan" first appeared in 1898. It means a young street tough, a member of a street gang, a ruffian. This year brings the appearance of a memoir titled "Hooligan: A Mormon Boyhood," by Doug Thayer. The setting may be a specific time and place, Provo, Utah in the 1930s and 40s.
